Whilst I have no experience of building, I am practically minded and have a keen interest in DIY, fixing bikes/boats etc. I am willing to 'muck in' and help with any part of a build, looking to gain experience so that one day I can build a house of my own!

I'm very interested in environmental issues and work as an engineer in the renewable energy industry.

They supposedly completed it for referral to Finnjoist for assessment/approval/sign-off and for recommendations on fixings etc.
I've just heard back that Finnjoist say:

"Due to the interaction of the new roof with the existing building and the nature of the hip ends they feel that it would be best for the design and detailing to be completed by the building designer/engineer."

I'd expected Finnjoist to be the roof element "building designer/engineer" in effect.

I have the finnjoist PDF's on recommended approaches to joints, plates, shims etc and can use these to work the plan up further into more detail.
However, in the absence of a "building designer/engineer" I'm going to need examples of other existing structures that demonstrate the structural integrity of what we're planning, through their use of comparable joist dimensions at comparable centres over comparable spans with comparable tie-ins etc etc ....

This is to confirm for myself what I know through having worked with timber,
but also in case Building control question it.

Any offers or suggestions would be very much appreciated.

Free (cost price) MCS / Feed in Tariff eligable solar PV installation - Leeds area http://www.greenbuildingforum.co.uk/newforum/comments.php?DiscussionID=5409 http://www.greenbuildingforum.co.uk/newforum/comments.php?DiscussionID=5409 Thu, 25 Feb 2010 21:03:28 +0000 Gavin_A
So, the jist of the situation is that I'm in the process of setting up as an independent MCS registered solar thermal and PV installer, and have hit a snag. Basically on top of all the training and registration fees and other expenses,I need to do at least 1 solar water heating and 1 solar PV installation that can be assessed before I gain my MCS accreditation. I installed a solar thermal set up on my house last year, so no problem there, and was planning to do the same with a solar PV installation, but basically all the training and accreditation fees mean I'm not going to have the cash to pay for the solar PV installatin.

Plan B then is to offer to do a free / cost price solar PV installation, which I've been assured by NAPIT will be eligable for MCS registration and the feed in tariff once the installation / I have been assessed as competent. If for any reason the assessment is negative, I'll put anything right that needs to be put right and get it reassessed at my expense.

Rules of the game...
1 - I'll install anything from 0.5kwp to 3kwp / essentially upto 16 amp single phase only
2 - You must have the money available, and will need to pay for the equipment up front
3 - I'd prefer not to do anything in a national park / conservation area / on a listed building... basically anything with any planning complications, and obviously have a suitable southwest / south / southeast facing roof.
4 - If scaffolding's needed then you'll need to cover the costs of that
6 - I'm based in Leeds, so my preference would be for somewhere relatively local, but if not then I'll travel if you'll put me up for the night and cover expenses.
7 - On grid only
8 - You must have sufficient spare capacity on your distribution board for an extra circuit, and your electricity company must not be a total pain in the arse to deal with.
8 - You agree for the system to be assessed by whoever needs to assess it, provide regular (monthlyish) monitoring / performance data, allow pictures to be used for promo purposes etc
9 - You're happy and have the money in place for the installation to be done in the next month or so.
10 - If you want a solar water heating installation done, or other energy efficiency work doing at the same time, then I can do that, but would need to be paid for that side of things.
11 - One install only, though I may be persuadable for a couple of installs to keep the peace

Essentially the offer is for an MCS accredited Feed In Tariff eligable solar PV system at DIY prices, or possibly even below DIY price if I manage to get VAT registered before the installation, and with me making nothing from it.

I'm not overly fussy about exactly which panels / system / supplier to use as long as it's MCS certified / G83 compliant if you have a supplier you want to use, but I'm pretty sure I've sussed out the cheapest MCS/G83 suppliers if you've no preference.

any takers?]]>

From what I have seen of it, it seems to be a good guide about good general construction techniques (but obviously to builing regs rather than green / sustainable standards) and would have been a useful addition to the library. He asked me if I was interested but I can't use them as they are curved ( for over arched doorways). Before he tries to sell them openly he agreed I could try the forum first. They will be cheaper than buying from a specialist salvage yard.

So far I have had around 6 in, 2 spent a whole day here measuring etc, only one sent a quote, but when I tried to take him up on it he disappeared!!!!

Two declined to spec the whole job, one never turned up and one has tried to be as helpful as possible, but says it is really out of his remit.

The house is about 600 years old in places, some timber framing with a brick facade, some solid brick. There are 4 rooms downstairs and 3 upstairs plus bathroom. Though they are a fair size. I can give fuller details as and when if neccessary.

We have an oil fired wick rayburn designed for up to 8 rads, trying to power 14, some of which are 8' long!!!!!

They get tepid.

We have two wood burning stoves and one open fire upstairs in a bedroom.

I'd like to try and get away from oil, though I love the rayburn for cooking.

The lounge wood bourner needs replacing, it is cracking and passed it's best. i think it was installed in 1978, so has done well.

I thought I'd replace this with a wood burner with back boiler. This could heat the water and supply our central heating. In order to have heating before we get up and light the fire, one engineer suggested we have a heat store/accumulator tank, which would supply us with morning heating to get up with ........ can't wait!!!

For the summer I thought we'd have some solar panels.

The rayburn can continue to be plumbed in to the hot water system, but I'd probably not light both wicks, just the cooking one.

We have no gas.

We have plenty of free wood.

We are 450m from the road, so the mains water supply is long and our pressure is quite low at the house, (a plumber friend is going to test it at the point it comes into the house for us, so I'll have a pressure and flow rate soon.) so we have two salamander 3.3bar pumps doing whole house pumping of both hot and cold water.

I started my search in March, thinking this year we'd be warm in the house. We work from home, so my wife gets the room with the other wood burner and I get a wooly jumper and thick coat. But the cold plays havoc with trying to work accurately on a pc!!!!

Is there anyone here who can do this, or has had something similar done that can recommend a company?

Graham]]>

Approx 8m 220mm ogee oak skirting and 5m 190mm ogee oak skirting.

These are spare after a bit of renovation work. I realise that the length is insufficient to do anything but the smallest of rooms but I feel awful about getting rid of them. Therefore, they are free to anyone if collected.]]>
