    I am currently building my own home and the design has an internal chimney stack/breast. I only wish to hang an imitation flame ELECTRIC fire on the breast itself so do I have to install a flue?

    Hi,
    I think if you install a chimney Building Control will look to it as operational. "If looks like a chimney, acts like a chimney, then it will have to operate within the rules and regs for a chimney". Try checking out part J of the builing regs and discussing it with the British Flue and Chimney Manufacturers Association.

    To clarify, my house is located in a conservation area, the planning department insisted that I have a chimney to 'be in keeping' with neighbouring houses. (None of which have a chimney) You know what the planning officers are like............................

    My cottage in Yorkshire has a flue at each end of the building, one of them was built as a dummy and can't be used. Corble a stack out of the party or end wall and let it protude above the roof. Single skin of bricks around a polystyrene core, stick a pot on it, looks luvely from street level.

    Yes - and we could have a huge discussion about fuels etc - particularly when you are not aware of how I am generating my electricity! No doubt you don't use any fossil fuels in your dwellings!? I was simply interested in chimney/flue arrangements - button it swampy!
