    Has anyone used insulation that is classed as 'seconds'? Some of which can be found on eBay? Any recommended suppliers?

    One of my new-build clients used seconds of 150 Pu to lay up 300mm under his slab. Most of the board faces looked OK, but the edges were 'sucked in'. I will ask where he got it from.

    Yep.
    Used Kingspan from Seconds and Co for our roof insulation. The sheet thickness was variable but as they were used between rafters it was no problem. Saved about 25% from memory.

    I used 150mm seconds under the floor screed in my house as nick said the only fault seemed to be the edges were sucked in a bit.
    When laying the boards I was squirting a bead of spray foam down every joint anyway so I doubt there were significant voids after.

    So Seconds and co is Kingspan's 'official' seconds shop. Do other insulation manufacturers have similar seconds web sites?

    Seconds & Co, yep can recommend them for their prices, I have used their products, but no go for EWI and other areas, where you need exact dimensions.

    I used Seconds & Co for the insulation under the g/f UFH. Had to use two different thickness's to get the total that I needed. Not all sheets were consistent thickness but since there is 65mm of screed on top, does not really matter.

    Some of my sheets had a date stamp and they had come off the production line about two weeks before I received them.

    Can highly recommend Seconds & Co.

    I assume the other manufacturers don't have seconds outlets as there duff product is recycled rather than sold off cheap?

    I got the impression that PU type foam can't be recycled so is sold as seconds. Polystyrene is broken down to its individual balls and reintroduced into the moulding process, according to an Americal manufacturers web site.

    Poss not significant cost saving either - squirty foam is expensive, in such quantity!

    That must depend on the number of cuts. For example a loft where each board needs cutting down, it makes no difference if the original edges poor.

    But can we trust that there are no voids within the boards?

    I received a batch of 200mm PIR boards direct, 'new', from a well-known UK manufacturer... and they had issues with voids in perhaps 10% of the boards....

    It seems that voids are not a reason alone for rejecting boards!:sad:

    I got the impression that the majority of seconds had edge damage or were tapered. Maybe voids are an unspoken problem?

    You may find they are a problem in first quality sheet too.

    But how much of a real problem is it. They are voids filled with gas, not holes.

    When I priced seconds the difference was so small I didn't bother. Maybe haggle more with the usual suppliers.

    The boards on second sand co vary in price quite considerably, and sometimes aren't much cheaper than firsts boards
