    Hi Guys, I do try & be as green as possible and this is probably not the forum to be asking advice/opinions are regarding gate automation kits. I am having my gates relocated and was wondering if anyone can advice as to how whether it makes any difference as to if i go for the underground/overground installation systems; any brands that are worth considering or avoiding?

    Fit ordinary gates and keep yourself fit by getting out of the car to open and close them!

    DONT go for the underground systems. The gates put too much strain on them leading to failure and your drive being dug up each time:cry:

    rig up an ingenious series of pulleys, ropes and springs, then set up a pull handle at drivers window height where you would have a push button.
    big pull to open the gate(s)
    big pull on the other side to close

    lots of head scratching required to get it all to work!!

    Hi,
    I am faced with the same issue as wanting electric gates within an eco build. All the ones I have come across are a bit too ornate. Has anyone come across a useful site that offers modern looking gates that are plain and simple in their design and that have the option of being powered by solar?

    My friend bought a new house with a long drive (OK he's rich), No external button to operate gates, range of remote control such he has to walk half way down the drive before he can operate the gates. we use to drive up to the front of the gates, phone him, he then had to walk down his drive to open the gates, we drive in. Now we we just park outside and walk down ourselves - its quicker!! The kit is Italian and buried but seems to be well made and powerful. If you do have to use a buried cable for mains etc, do leave a piece of rope in the pipe so you can pull in more cables (lights?, communications?, bell? or even for a burgular/ gate opening sounder).
