So... seen as the official SAP 2005 publication seems to be essential a print out of a spread sheet, why am I finding it so hard to find a straight *.xls to download and use...?

How are you planning to use the spreadsheet? Do you mean the worksheet published within SAP? http://projects.bre.co.uk/sap2005/pdf/SAP2005_9-82.pdf

"The method of calculating the energy performance and the ratings is set out in the form of a worksheet,
accompanied by a series of tables ... The calculation should be carried out using a computer program that implements the
    worksheet"

Are you planning to do the SAP calc manually using the worksheet? Is that allowed or do you have to use software that impliments the worksheet?

Yup. idea was to use for our house to do two things, 1 to give me a better understanding of SAP and 2 to produce a non accredited CfSH rating for my own satisfaction. If the BCO accepts it that's a bonus.

That'll be v interesting, to understand how it works - I hope you do it pronto and tell us all about it. Seen http://www.aecb.net/forum/index.php?topic=1643.0 ? Do you now have the worksheet via the SAP download link I gave?

Gosh loads in that to be looking at. Seen as we've got the PHPP and have already played around with it quite a bit a comparison would be v. informative.

At the risk of hijacking my own thread I think a key issue with CfSH is the %improvement with SAP factor, whereas if a PHPP absolute kWh/m2/a were used at each CfSH levels some of the inherent dodgyness of CfSH at higher levels would be removed.

    You could try this

    http://www.sei.ie/Your_Building/BER/BER_Assessors/Technical/DEAP/DEAP_2008/

Irish methodology for EPC's ( called BER here ) . It produces a BER ( Building Energy Rating ) in kwhr/m2/yr and co2 /m2/year rating
The software , DEAP ( Dwelling Energy Asessment Procedure ) is derived from SAP . DEAP is also used to demonstrate compliance with ( Irish ) Part L

Until BRE authorise some software that runs on Linux some of us can only use the spreadsheet version. Last time I looked there was a choice of about 15 programs exactly none of which ran on Linux, and none of them were Free Software, no doubt due to BRE's desire to get £1000 of anyone who writes such software. A free version would be very useful to lots of people, but in the meantime the spreadsheet will have to do.

Been working with the Knauf software over the weekend, seems ok - bit tricky to get into the nuts and bolts but compensates with nice graphs and the like, and apparently licenced by BRE...

    ... and FREE!!!
