Anyone planning a sun room/conservatory might be interested to know that from last Oct you no longer had to have a certain minimum amount of glass in it to qualify as a exempt conservatory under the building regs. There are still other conditions. The advice page here has been updated..

Depends what you call a conservatory!!
A room with TV, 3 piece suite and dining table is never a conservatory no matter how much or little glazing you have

If you look at the link, it states 'As long as over 50% of the furniture in the room is constructed from wicker/bamboo, the room can be considered a conservatory'.

Is it clear what fraction of the kitsch furniture also has to be cheap tat and mainly of merit because it's kept out of biomass burners? Will there be an Renewable Kitsch Incentive to fill up sustainable conservatories with more of this and small plaster objects recycled from gift shops bearing the prophetic works "Best Wishes From Scunthorpe"?

On a serious note, there is very little in that document to actually define what is a conservatory. Maybe I missed something but there appears to be no mention of a glass roof, and no mention of glass walls. Would it therefore be possible to build an extension, with proper insulated walls, an insulated tiled roof with velux windows, and pass it off as a conservatory? If that's the case, then I might even build one next year.

A lot of unhelpful sites still out there, but the laddo has a pretty good definition/explanation from the GGF...

That seems to contradict the FENSA view, unless the site I linked to is distorting things. Better to remove my previous post I think.

A lot what's out there was written while the Oct 2010 changes were in consultation. When the Approved Docs were actually published not everyone noticed the changes or updated their guide. Some written in November were wrong. Even the Planning Portal web page on conservatories was incorrect for awhile. To me it smells like the minimium glass rule was omitted by mistake.
