I've got the opportunity to buy 158 Packs of 100mm Rockwool External Wall Duel Density Slab insulation for£300, could I use it for the exterior insulation of my timber frame New build? If so, how would you fix it and could I render over it?

An insulation firm has gone bust and there are around1000 packs of rock wool slabs going for around £300 for 200 packs. Insulation has never been so cheap, well not since the B&Q Eco days.

I used 75 mm semi-rigid glass fibre slabs on the exterior of our frame. I fixed horizontal timbers at 60 cm centres, fitted the insulation between, then covered it all with breathable fabric and then the battens / cladding. Tedious, but it will keep the frame warmer! Not sure how you would use 100 mm slabs as the timber would be quite deep and be difficult to fix without them being pulled downwards by any cladding?? Can you use it for the roof space?

(Owlman, if you're going to be picky about Triassic's spelling/typing you could also point out it's likely “dual density”, not “duel density”. Mineral wool slabs at dawn. Glastonbury Tor rising out of the early morning mist. Kubrick ought to have made a film about it.)

I keep saying it but Larsen truss? Do you need to render over it (planning requirement or something) or would a ventilated cavity and rainscreen not be another option?

Needs to be the right 'rockwool' for EWI I think. and there are many variants...

Not an insulation I would choose for EWI myself for lots of reasons - not least the thickness require to hit the target u-vale is greater than rigid insulants which by definition are more robust
