Can anybody point me to a source for hourly temperature figures for somewhere in England? I'm looking ideally for hourly data for a 'representative' year, or actual data for one or more years.

    Thanks, Dave

Do a search for online weather stations. There are thousands across the UK. There's a package called Weather Display that logs on a minute-by-minute basis and can manage websites for you.

My weather station lasted a couple of years before the sensors died. I'm not sure where the data is though, as it was a couple of computers ago.

I use the below for good monthly averaging (maxima/minima) data (50 years) here:

    http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/climate/uk/stationdata/

I also tried to get hold of hourly & daily figures but met office isn't keen on releasing

@Tuna, thanks, yes, there are thousands of weather stations (haystack). Finding one that offers hourly or so data is my problem (needle)! Ideally with some sort of pedigree.

@Jon, yes, the met office are fine about 'bona fide academic research (sorry no undergraduates)' but less so about 'personal', let alone 'commercial' use. <rant> It's another case of paying taxes to fund data production that we're not allowed to use. It makes a mockery of this statement on their web site: "The Met Office is committed, wherever possible, to making a positive contribution to UK society". Progress is made by communication, not secrecy. </rant>

djh - If you search for 'Weather Display uk' or similar, you should be able to find some excellent amateur weather stations - there are some websites that link amateur stations across the UK, some of which have been running for years with a good chance there will be one local to you. If you contact the owners of one of these sites, they may well be able to give you the data.

I know this thread is 6 months old but are you still after data?

I can't seem to do links, but you can get hourly temps for the last 24h for most of the planet at http://weather.noaa.gov/
On the Met Office website you can also get UK hourly data for the last 24h at http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/uk/observations/index.html
    (click on the location)
