    Hello all,

I am currently studying BSc Construction Management at Plymouth University, and undertaking a dissertation which aims to explore self-builders opinions of the Government’s agenda for zero carbon homes by 2016.

If you have recently self-built, are currently building or plan to begin building your home, I would be grateful if you could spare 5 minutes to fill in the questionnaire accessed through the link below.

It does not matter if you do not know what the Government’s agenda is, but in simple terms (if enforced) it will require all homes built after 2016 to have high fabric energy efficiency standards (highly insulated) and possibly require the use of on-site low or zero carbon technologies, such as solar thermal panels.

    Many thanks, Steve

Steve, are you at the Drakes Circus campus or a satellite one?

Shame, I don't go there very often. They have a satellite at Camborne, it is a big tent that they build houses in, pretty neat set-up.

Sounds interesting, we don't have anything like that on the main campus, we are down that way next week for a site visit to the eden project though.

Thank you to everyone who has filled in my questionnaire, I've had a good response rate from this forum already.

I have completed your survey, but had not realised till the end that it was was for England only. Scotland, Wales, and Ireland are excluded by the last question. I entered NE England, as it is the nearest to the part of Scotland I live in. Also, no question as to whether you have actually built a new house, or just thinking about it.

Hi Colin, you are entirely correct. Originally when I posted on several other forums, like the self build portal, I specified just England and I stated that you must either have recently built or be planning to build before January 2015.

The trouble was I only had nine replies in two months and I need more respondents to use it in my dissertation so I left it out when posting on here. I hoped people would do what you did and select anywhere in England. Not accurately representative I know, but I need some replies to meet my upcoming deadline lol.

It's been great on here though, I have had 17 replies in one day.

Sorry for the confusion but thank you all very much for filling in the questionnaire.

    Steve

Thank you to all who have filled in my survey.

Are there any self-builders in the south west who could spare roughly 30 minutes?

As part of my dissertation I am looking to informally interview 6 people who are soon to build, currently building, or who have recently built their house.

The purpose will be to find out a little about your house with regards to its design and any energy efficient construction or low/renewable energy technology that may be used. I would also like to get your opinions about energy efficient homes, and what their benefits and challenges are to you.

With your permission I may take a couple of photos of your home and record the interview to aid the write up. In accordance with the University’s ethical policy this data would be treated confidentially and deleted on completion of the research.

Please let me know if you are interested and I can 'whisper' my contact details. I can meet most days, at a time and place (hopefully your new build) convenient for you.

    Regards, steve.

I am just south of Wellington, Somerset and completed our self-build last year if that helps.

That would be great! I'll give it a week to see who else comes forward as I may try and get to a few builds in one day. I will get back to you soon if that's alright.

    Thanks, Steve

Two more very interesting self-builds visited and self-builders interviewed today, thank you both so much for welcoming me into your homes and volunteering your time. My research would be worthless without the three interviewees and the people who have filled in my questionnaire. Just three more interviews and I am ready to write up.

    Thanks again, Steve.

So are you still looking for three more self builders to interview as part of your research?

If so, how do they contact you.

Hi, yes I am looking for three more, I have been using the 'whisper'/pm facility to pass on my contact details. My email address is schobden@aol.com, I have also just added it to my personal details. Let me know if you would be interested.

    Regards, Steve.

    Hello all,

Two more great interviews and beautiful houses yesterday, thank you both ever so much. I have been privileged to see five very different self-builds and gain some really valuable opinions from the self-builders.

I feel I should apologise for not being the best interviewer, it is not something I have done before and there is a bit of an art to it, I think I have got better with each interview though lol.

I am looking for one more self-builder, but ideally I need someone involved in a community self-build as I have not interviewed anyone from this sector. If you know of anyone willing, that would be fantastic.

Once again, thank you very very much to all who have participated. All the best, Steve.
