    My neighbour (in France) is wanting to install an Aarrow Stratford to a 500-litre thermal store and has a couple of questions.

    Per the installation manual (pages 23 & 24) he is surprised to see no system to control the return water temperature (such as a Thermovar or a Laddomat) and he is wondering if this is standard UK practice ?

    The manual shows a thermosiphon secondary circuit for safety in event of a circulator fault, then the circulator itself on the main circuit, controlled by a simple thermostat located on the return side of the secondary circuit.

    So basically he is not sure how to proceed - he was effectively planning for a thermosiphon, but is having second thoughts that the return might be too cool (hence dew-point problems and corrosion...)

    Any inputs gratefully accepted !

    How youve described your neighbours plans are more or less how our stove is hooked up to our tank.

    The thermosiphon return temp is governed by the tank temp so as the tank warms up so will the return temp. Ive never seen any control system that regulates the thermosiphon return temp to maintain it above a minimum temp.

    Our pumped circuit is enabled by a pipe stat on the thermosiphon return leg so once the tank is hot the pumped CH can start. Been working fine for 17 years with minimal soot/smoke so its all up to temp and burning nicely.

    The only problem I would see is if there is a constant un uncontrolled heat draw from the TS that keeps it continuously cool. Using a pipe stat on the thermosiphon return to inhibit any such load at low temps should keep everything toasty:)

    Generally you don't have a laddomat or similar on thermosiphon (gravity) systems. The gravity circulation will be governed by the temperature difference between the top and bottom of the circuit. The bigger the difference the faster the flow. (laddomeat ect. have pumps to drive the circulation)
