Keen to monitor the temperatures in my house and was wondering if there were any recommendations for thermometers ? Have seen the LCD ones but have never used these. Am guessing that trad ones are greener (no batteries) but this might not be the case (mercury !).

Looking to buy at least two (one upstairs and ones down).

I'm interesting in measuring temp in my currently un-plumbed (no rads) house and the effect that a wood burner (currently installed) has when I light it.

Or is there a cleverer way now with devices linking to laptops and the like ? Would make my life easier as I could set it to sample at hourly intervals throughout the day and night... any thoughts ?

    Thanks,
    Ed

You can get Networked thermometers designed for measuring and logging the temperature in computer rooms...

Some are web enabled so you can (if you want to?) monitor the temperature of your house from the beach.

    Hi Ed,

Sounds like hard work, taking hourly readings day and night.

I don't know how much you want to spend, but you could look at these, which are around £50 each:

I have a couple that I use for datalogging applications. They just plug into the USB slot on your computer, when you can program them to take temperature readings at set intervals until the memory runs out. You then place them in the locations whose temperature you want to measure (mine also measure relative humidity as well, at the same time). When the monitoring period is over, you can just plug them into the computer, upload the data, and easily produce a graph using the software that came with them. I've found them very reliable, though the batteries are pricey when you have to replace them.

I hasten to add that I have no connection whatever with the companies that make/sell them.
