I'm not getting any replies on Money Saving Expert forums so thought I'd try here, though not essentially a green question :shamed:

I am coming to the end of a long contract with SSE for my business electricity. The price is going to quadruple. I get bombarded every day with calls from energy brokers. They annoy me because they always want your phone number and I'd rather do things by email.

Am I best using a broker? Will they always be able to get a better deal even though they get commission?

If a broker is the best option, which one should I use? Anyone got any opinions?

Over the years have learnt to keep away from brokers. A few years ago a broker recommended I go with SSE I think it was. I went direct and got it cheaper than with the broker. When I mentioned it to the broker he replied, "how do you think I make my business pay."
When they ring now I just say I am already fixed up.
Brokering can be very profitable its OPM. (Other people's money). I once met a guy on a course about 25 years ago and he and his wife had a business matching fuel tankers to loads that needed delivering. He claimed they made £4 Millon a year. A home office, phones and fax machines and contacts book were their tools.

Any broker you use will have to come up with a deal better than you can get yourself, if he can't then don't use them. Until you sign a bit of paper of exclusivity then you are free to go to someone else or DIY. I don't see any harm in talking to them to see what they offer. You never know until you ask and if you don't like it - walk away. The key will be to start early so that you are not rushed to make choices.
