    Anyone ever used this stuff?
    http://paintsdirect.co.uk/plaster-render/insowall.html

Assume that's quite expensive at £40 for 15 kgs?

Not used it but I would be instinctively wary of anything with such a naff name.
Let alone one making claims like, "It is one of the most effective ways to insulate your home/building today".
Or anything claiming to be insulation that does not quote any actual insulation performance figures such as thermal conductivity.

Unless it is an unbelievably good insulator (which is pretty unlikely given the nature and cost of the best insulating materials) then 10-40mm is not going to be very effective just because it is not thick enough.

And if that doesn't tell you enough already then a quick look at the Thermakote web site should help. It's gone... just someone cyber-squatting on it now. And the company appears to be dissolved... company formed in Jan 2011, gone in May 2012.

Looking at the internet archive, the web site back in January 2012 include a page on "Independent Testing" that has a map of the world and just says:-

"Our products have been independently tested by world leading laboratories and government bodies for a variety of applications.

Each product is subjected to rigorous testing under strict laboratory conditions and independent testing has proved scientifically that “Thermakote products achieve outstanding results.” "

There is another company called Thermakote UK ltd but it is very new and doesn't appear to do anything.

So all things considered - I don't think I would risk it.

Oh... and they used to sell insulating paint too. Apparently it could "SAVE UP TO 25% ON HEATING BILLS"!

There is a community review (well, kind of) here:-

    http://www.lowcarboneconomy.com/profile/thermakote_limited/_products_and_services/thermakote_insulating_paint_additive/14908

And a heat box test here on Youtube:-

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kMrNSBxXSeM

And you can watch it not burn here:-

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kMrNSBxXSeM

Well that proves it. That must be an inch of highly flammable wood it is insulating there and it stays "cold to the touch". NASA should have got these guys to paint the space shuttle.
Mind you, those guys in the video don't look much like one of those "world leading laboratories" doing the tests so I guess they must be one of the "government bodies" instead. Yes, that must be it. They do look like a government body.

I do like the internet :-)
How did we all get by before?

Used it as an experiment. Found it extremely difficult to get the mix right in order to apply it to the wall. Only did 20mm thick in two stages. If the mix isn't right it picks up behind the trowel and peels of the surface. But get it too wet and it slumps. All went well until I skimmed it with gypsum (all I had to hand at the time although original intention was lime) and as it dried it pulled the insowall off. It's still standing! but with big cracks and sounds very hollow so will have remedied in the future.
Without the skim of plaster the surface of the insowall felt a lot warmer than surrounding internal walls. Now with the skim as well they feel slightly warmer and the room on the whole feels a lot better - it's a flat roofed room with three external walls.
