    Good or bad?

    They watch for and report on littering, dog fouling, people even neighbours not recycling properly.

    Is this a move forwards and towards a better environment?

    I fear for their personal safety... Will they be allowed to lecture people driving Range Rovers in town?

    It would be so much better if we were all encouraged to be 'green', just like we are encouraged to eat healthy, not spit in the street, and be kind to our children.

    It's all about educating our children now. When visiting friends in Australia I commented on how clean the city was and was told that the message about dropping litter had been rammed home during the school years. Same goes for sunbathing.

    We already have council workers in Perth who patrol the streets and will issue a fine for dropping litter or dog fouling. £50 on the spot fine for dropping a fag butt.

    Stewart are these paid council workers or volunteers?

    Paid Litter Officers. Here is an extract from the website.

    What do the litter officers do?
    Perth and Kinross Council's Litter Officers can be seen on patrol, the hope is for them to be a deterrent but they also have the ability to give on the spot fines.

    Perth and Kinross Council have employed Litter Officers to:

    carry out enforcement duties under Part IV of the Act (such as the issuing of a £50 Fixed penalty Notice for the offence of littering);
    monitor the proper presentation of commercial and domestic waste;
    use their local knowledge to identify areas where the authority could consider using its powers in Part IV of the Act (such as deciding where to issue street litter control notices and designate litter control areas)
    provide an educational/training role in schools, youth clubs, etc;
    motivate and co-ordinate "clean-up" schemes; and
    monitor the performance of the street cleaning contract.
    How much is the litter fine/fixed penalty notice?
    It is currently £50. This figure was set by the Scottish Executive in July 2003.

    Was at a fast food outlet today. As I went in, a guy and his son were eating their take away meal in their car WITH THE ENGINE RUNNING! I couldn't believe that anyone could be so wasteful. Then, on my way out, I saw someone else doing it! Maybe they need to arm these volunteers with a big lumps of wood to batter some sense into these idiots....
