Do Windows for new builds come in standard sizes or do I leave a hole and get a window made to measure.
  1.
The size tends to be governed by practical glass weight (i.e. what the hinges can take) but as far as I know they just cut lengths of frame to suit.

Velfac have charts showing the range of widths and heights that are feasible (rather than discrete sizes). See page 12 onwards in here for an example: http://velfac.co.uk/Global/UK%20PDF%20and%20files/1/The%20VELFAC%20catalogue%202014a%20-%20UK.pdf

We tend to design to brick dimensions on most our buildings to keep cladding options open.

I would order the windows first then build the holes to suit. Depends a bit on lead times for the windows.

Pretu much standard sized windows don't exist any more, computer controlled everything and swift supply me and everything is made to measure. The better companies have long lead times due to popularity.

The offerings from the merchants are sized to fit in with course heights/brick multiples.
If you are looking for something 'better', it doesn't matter...

This partly depends on the build method. If Brick and block, you can order the windows but make up a former that is the right size. For a TF, the opening is pretty accurately set in the frame so it should not be an issue and the windows go in before the outer skin.

Interesting issue (as a slight aside) check and see how much space there is when the windows are open. The windows (and more particularly the doors) I have are very close to the plasterboard and I would have rather had a bigger gap. The biggest issue is that you cannot have skirting in the reveals behind the doors.
