A consortium of Welsh businesses, fostered by a timber promotion initiative, has brought to market a Welsh first that promises to change the face of buildings across the UK.

The new Welsh PassivHaus timber window system is a quantum leap in design which looks set to win back buyers from the plastic sector with new standards in energy efficiency, longevity and design.

What makes this new system – just this week given approval by the German authorities – even more impressive is that it has taken only two and half months from concept to final product.

But did the Larch House's architect ever read John Ruskin's Seven Lamps of Architecture?
  1.
In principle great. However, I couldn't find any technical details of the windows on the site, or through a relatively quick Google. Can anyone point me to the data?

Also, one for the Unit Police - the first link includes the following definition of a PassivHaus: "house can be heated on just 15 kilowatts of energy per square metre a year".

I was just going through some old links and came across this thread. At least one of the links seems to have bitrot, but I found a few more. Does anybody know any more about either technical details or commercial availability?

    The windows:
http://www.cpjoinery.co.uk/News.aspx - has the PHI certificate for the windows (view image for legible version)
http://www.cpjoinery.co.uk/PassivhausWindows.aspx - has some manufacturing photos

    Descriptions of the house:

    http://www.bere.co.uk/projects/lime-house-passivhaus
  2.
From the manufacturing photos you linked too its clear that its an internaly glazed window. Given the climate on these islands and in exposed locations in particular I would definitely prefer an externally glazed drained & ventilated system. Secondly the sections look to be a Schiller product which they would buy in in bar length. This would raise the question of what preservative treatment is being used.

    djh,

Custom Precision Joinery are local up here in N Wales, just 'down the road' from an Internorm reseller, so easy to compare the two offerings.... they have a similar product to the Internorm PH spec, but more reasonably priced!
