I just watched this week's Grand Designs. It was excellent! At last a programme worth watching. Both the homeowner and the architect are great characters and the house is brilliant. Walls made entirely of wood (although it looks like they did chicken out and put plasterboard on the inside) and a toilet with a door to the outside. The fingerjointed sweet chestnut looks lovely; I wonder how they finished the cladding?

And there was a certain schadenfreude-ist pleasure in hearing Kevin calling a butterfly roof an inverted roof.

I really enjoyed this weeks program. It seemed more a story of the people than the house, but nothing wrong with that.

I am wondering if I could do similar cladding on a garden room I'd like to build.

Any chance of a link to the catch-up version ... or if not, an episode title? I'd love to have a look ...

I just watched the next one, the steel and glass airport lounge or art gallery. Whilst I like his attention to detail I would hate to live in such a place, will try to see the other on catchup tonight.

Thanks for the heads up this episode. More or less given the program up in recent times but that was a most entertaining watch.

Was surprised when the architect said it was OK for the woodfibre board to get wet. Thought these types of board swelled when wet.

Normal woodfibre boards don't like getting wet but there are special ones (the one I remember is Isolair) that have a more waterproof outer layer and are intended for sarking.

We watched the "boat man" one last night on catch up, much more my cup of tea than the glass and steel art gallery. Nice chap but shows what drugs can do to you!!!

Thanks for flagging these two up. Yes, agd, the boat house was to me more satisfying by far. I tell you what though, I bet there are TV executives right now being dispatched to sign those two brothers up for some sort of documentary ... what a fascinating relationship they have, there is plenty of meat on that bone!
