To stop climate change, we need to stop burning fossil fuels. The government says we need nuclear power to do this. A new film from Greenpeace explains why nuclear power can’t stop climate change – and lays down a better, cheaper, more convenient solution. The government's present consultation on nuclear power may be our last chance to make sure we get the UK's energy policy right. The consultation ends in October.
DVDs of The Convenient Solution have been sent to every MP. You can help by urging your MP to watch the film and asking them to represent your views to John Hutton, who has responsibility for the present energy consultation and the decision on nuclear power. To view the film and find more information ...

That all sounds great, but what will we actually be burning in the CHP plants being proposed? I'm all for using agricultural and industrial by-products for this purpose, even non-recycleable domestic waste, but that isn't going to be enough. Seems to me that we will become ever more reliant on imported natural gas. Plus we still have no medium of storage for when the wind turbines aren't working so we will have to install extra gas generation to cover this which adds to the cost. The don't address the transport issue at all which makes up a big chunk of the pie chart and the most likely transport fuel of the future is electricity, so we are going to need more of it not less, even allowing for efficiencies.

I still don't buy the argument that you can't have new nuclear and expand renewables and push hard on energy efficiency and build CHP plants to deal with your wastes and by-products. Why the hell not? If you are going to propose local grids then why can you link offshore winds and tidal barrages into that system and not nuclear power plants? Most of the renewable resource is on the west coast but the people aren't, so you will still need a national grid system so you can still have nuclear power plants.

If you are going to make a credible case against nuclear power then it starts with the fuel supply issue to which GreenPeace don't refer once in the whole film. I think this is because no-one really knows what the total nuclear fuel resource is and it is easier to make lazy arguments about Big Bens full of waste and legacy clean up costs. Of course to build any new nuclear stations (to which I'm not opposed to in principle) would be daft before we find out whether there will be enough fuel to run them for the next 50 years.

I agree with what you say Chris.

In fact if we don't do something soon it will be too late anyway.

but will this government actually do more than just talk about IT I doubt it.

I am trying to install a 600kw CHP system in Lancashire and so that I can get my hands on the ROCs my CHP unit has to comply with CHPQA .Can anybody advise how to fill in this garbage as I have done as the CHPQA advised and filled in the first 4 pages but they now say I need an expert to fill in the rest but cannot recommend an expert as nobody has done a woodchip solar CHP before. any assistance would be appreciated.
