Housing - Renovation: Causes of damp

    When we moved into our house, there were some woodworm living in the cupboard the stairs. A surveyor attributed this to damp due to vents blocked by a dining room extension; covered the wood in boron & installed two vents in the dining room floor.

    However, the hallway with the cupboard under the stairs smells awful musty & I'm wondering if we still have a problem.

    Does anyone know if there's a cheap way of checking for damp? Is there any way of telling if floor vents & external air bricks are letting enough, or too much, air through?

    If when you sniff it it smells musty this is a bad sign. It sounds to me like you need to ventilate the cupboard a bit more. It could very well be that this is an unheated space and is picking up small amounts of condensation as a result.

    First thing to do is leave the door open for a couple of months! If this solves the problem find some way to permanently ventilate the cupboard, cut a slice off the bottom of the door and do a grill high up over the door for example. (is it on an outside wall?)

    Thanks Tony - I'll give that a try - it is an unheated space & it is on an outside wall, so I guess you're going to suggest putting a vent in the wall?

    No Ventilate it well so that the cupboard becomes the same temperature as the hall way and all your problems will go away.

    Ventilating to outside will make the house colder.
