The public has been invited to come forward with suggestions on which state-owned land and buildings should be sold off by the coalition.

These will be visible on a “Rightmove-style” search engine of all government real estate, allowing people to search by town and postcode for anything from vacant airfields to motorway lay-bys.

Under the system – first announced last year – the applications will go before a new committee of ministers from the Treasury and Cabinet Office to consider.

They will only refuse if the location is “vital for operational use” or if there are overriding reasons. Heritage buildings such as the British Museum and Downing Street will be excluded.

“We certainly should not act as some kind of compulsive hoarder of land and property that could be better used for things like housing and local economic growth,” said Mr Alexander.

A similar system already existed, but this applied only to land owned by local authorities that was “empty or under-used”.

So if you have spotted any land you fancy self building on, owned by local authorities or the Government, just make them an offer. Simple as that !!

Perhaps they'd just sell the green bit in the middle? That's not doing anything.

    Most of the time
  1.
So how do you find out who owns that apparently abandoned bit of land. Doubtless there will be bits of land that have been forgotten about in the mists of time and some of it being part of that which is owned by the state that could be sold off. Over here land ownership is a matter of public record, any one can go to the land registry office and see who owns what piece of land for free. How will it work in the UK.

A Land Registry was created 30yrs(?) ago and is steadily filling in the gaps. Until job cuts and pressure pressure pressure - my bro in law's senior job there has become hell, caught between redundancy terror and longing to escape!

If land is registered in the UK with HM LR then you can discover ownership.
However, if it has not been transferred since 1986 (or later) then you cannot find out, centrally!

Camp out on it, and see who complains?

But does the public have the right to access the information contained therein?

    Yes, for a small fee:

    http://www.landregistry.gov.uk/public/property-ownership

Scotland has a separate land registry.
