Housing - New Build: Any tips for using aluminium tape on insulation boards?

    Just about to buy lots of aluminium tape to start sealing the joints and I was wondering whether anybody had any tips on using it, which size to buy etc.?

    The roof design has 150mm Kingspan-type boards between the rafters and then a further 50mm below the rafters. The boards between the rafters have been cut slightly narrow and then the gaps at the sides have been filled with expanding foam to get a good seal.

    My questions are:

    1. Should I tape both layers?

    2. Is there a recommended overlap for the tape on to the insulation board?

    Andrew,

    Use 100mm/4" tape. If you try with the 50mm / 2" you will find you go 'off piste' as you run down/across the seams and then have to cut and restart. This tape is sticky, it will pull the foil facing off the boards.

    I think we got the last lot off the web, a lot less than the 'branded' offerings.

    Tape both layers by all means, if you have the time & persistence!

    I got a couple of rolls in Lidl when they had them just to see what it was like - how stiff and sticky, etc. 3M I think, maybe 50 mm or perhaps a bit wider. Seemed OK. Any particular brands better than others?

    I foam up the joins then fit a lightweight polythene vapour barrier (VB) over the lot,
    hold it there with some 50mm wide strips of 9-18 mm OSB (or 25/50mm batons if depth allows) through the 50mm PUR to the rafters
    or visa-versa hold the 50mm PUR with the strips/batons and staple the vapour barrier to that
    Fit the plasterboard to OSB/batons
    tape or seal VB to gables walls, roof lights and connect to what ever airtightness/VB detailing you've got at floor level.

    Saves farting about with shiny tape :bigsmile:

    I never have a problem with 50mm tape. Indeed when I need more strenght I use very expensive 60mm-wide air-tightness tape, which we cut down to 30mm wide.

    Foil tape tears easily, and can split on perimeters, when forming a right-angle. I generally use foil tape on straight joints, and a/t tape on perimeters.

    What about all the little dents and nicks you get in the PUR board foil , simpler to just fly a polythene VB over the lot .
    Quicker, cheaper, more robust , no ?

    I used the 4 inch wide tape so no problem with nicks or dents in the PUR foil. I wouldn't have been able to use a PE VB as the drywall screws used to secure the plasterboards would have punctured it.

    Jeff. Wont screws puncher foil also. Using osb strips/ batons would reduce this ?

    I used radon tape to form a gasket everywhere I had to screw through the VB to fix battens.

    For roofs, where there are no pilot holes, I generally rely on the screw to seal its own hole in the VCL - best it can do, I tend to feel - and for IWI I pre-drill the holes, gun them full of silicone, and fix through that.

    Yes they would; hence I used 50 x 25 mm battens on top of 50 mm Celotex and screwed through both into roof rafters. Then cut appropriately sized pieces of 25 mm Celotex to make a friction fit between the battens and taped over the battens, overlapping the tape onto the Celotex on each side of the batten. Also used foil-backed plasterboard as a belt-and-braces!
