I have just bought a rammed chalk house in Hampshire and am struggling to find a builder who will take on renovation work. Does anyone know how I can find someone with the expertise? Surveyors have not been helpful.

Try specialist company like Ward & Co? Or get your chosen builder educated in this new area ( cheaper option would be to learn it all yourself and then give instructions).

I agree with Tony's suyggestion. The average builder is going to suggest completely unsuitable and potentially damaging approaches. Contact SPAB (http://www.spab.org.uk); they will know of surveyors and possibly builders in your area competent enough to advise, as will the 'seeking specialists' section of the Period Property website (http://www.periodproperty.co.uk/vendors.shtml). Your best bet, however, will be to research the subject yourself and keep an eagle eye on anyone who does work on the house. SPAB has some useful guidance notes which you can download. Also have a look at Richard Oxley's 'Survey and Repair of Traditional Buildings' (Donhead, 2003). It's not cheap at £40, but you may be able to get it on a library loan or via Amazon. It's invaluable.

Hi Tracy, I'm just about to finish a PhD about the conservation and repair of historic rammed earth buildings, I could take a look at the renovation work if you want to send me some photographs. For builders, your best best might be Bill Swanney at www.earthstructures.co.uk, who is a rammed earth builder but has also done some repair work. If you want to undertake some of the work yourself you should look at Gordon Pearson's book "Conservation of clay and chalk buildings" (http://www.dur.ac.uk/p.a.jaquin/links_books.htm), which has tips on conservation of chalk buildings he found in Hampshire. I believe he is retired now, but he is likely to be your best best.
