We are discussing over regulation on another thread I know

But there seems to be singular lack or regulations relating to the domestic use of recycled rain water.

I think that a regulation colour of pipe would be a good idea for a start. then there is labelling, and I'm sure they could turn it into a book.

Isn't that all covered in WRAS and second tier guidance (EA, manufacturers etc)

It's a notifiable system - as long as you can't contaminate drinking water, what other regulation (as opposed to good practice) would you want

Labelling is a requirement of the WRAS guidance

    Regards

The thought of a future plumber finding and teeing into a recycled rainwater pipe is something that is going to happen one day. The consequences are pretty horrid for all concerned.

It's happened already - the visible case was an eco-housing development in Northampton (Upton)

I would have thought any competent pumber would be able to work out what he's cutting into for the alteration - all the guidance recommends pipe labelling however. In simple terms, wouldn't he need to find an isolate the pipework before cutting the T anyway

    Regards

The guidance is to use green pipes for rainwater systems. As they do not exist (so far as I am aware) my answer was to wrap green insulation tape around them in a helical fashion. Hopefully any future plumber will say "what the hell" when he sees them and go to the Building Manual which I have written for our house and is written (or should be) for all new properties. Please no more regulations; recommendations and education in best practice yes but more rules, bureaucracy and people doing the checks no. {Edit: this was done before the new WRAS Rules came out; cannot find any labels that they recommend].

If yet more rules were needed here (much sympathy for pmusgrove's last sentence) why wouldn't we already have different colouring for potable water and water from loft tanks?

We do - BS 1710 and subsequent ?

It's not common on little domestic set ups but pipework identification is pretty much the norm outside of that.

So down feeds from potable water tanks should be basic green with white/blue/white colour ID

    Regards

  1.
I came across this when installing a rainwater flush system - the coloured pipes don't exist yet ( at least not in local plumbers shops) so I made it plainly obvious by using clear 25mm pvc pipe, even get to watch the odd leaf head towards the cistern.
I put a non return valve on the domestic cold water feed to the cistern and as there is an air gap (in the cistern) that's all that was necessary.
One day something somewhere is going to go wrong but no more than normal.
