Its time for our 5 yearly spray of all our timber in our grade 2 listed farmhouse. Normally we use Cuprinol woodworm killer which last time cost us £15 for each 5 ltrs. Now the cost has gone upto £40 for 5 ltrs so looking for alternatives of which Sikhs at £15 for 5 ltrs seems reasonable but is it as good. Have always used Cuprinol due to being odourless which is important for my wife as she is asthmatic.

I never heard of it having to be re-done 5-yearly - thought once was enough.

Cuprinol toxic - or it used to be - can't be helping the asthma.

Try borate - no more toxic than common salt - only snag is it remains water soluble so will leach out if it gets wet.

I use Permethrin spray (Xylamon) in the holes but a preventative surface spread is stated as 200ml/m2. Kills the buggers stone dead (I think 'cos I never see 'em agin!)

Unfortunately chemicals do not last very long so we need to retreat. As for borate its not strong enough to kill the little critters. Just been installing the new 3G windows and found one lintel is actually wood which is riddled with woodworm needless to say I have removed and replaced with a cut stone lintel but the rafters will need treating where it touched the lintel.
