Housing - Renovation: Insulate redundant chimney?

    I have had a fireplace bricked up and the roofers will be taking down the chimney to slate over. Should I be putting insulation such as EPS beads in there before it becomes inaccessible?

    Single storey so wouldn't take too much fill.

    9" solid brick walls which become thinner to the back of the chimney. I hope to add EWI at some point in the future.

    I would fill it with eps beads full, wrap what you can of the bricks with fibreglass quilt

    Is granulated cork a suitable alternative to EPS for this?? I see Mike Wye supply it.

    I cant see why not, it is organic so could decay or rot , i prefer not to use organic insulants if there is a choice.

    So use leca instead? Or treated vermiculite for insulation purposes?

    ... or recycled glass beads - better lambda value than both vermiculite or leca and better flowing ability than EPS beads at depths.

    Thanks, Peter. My roofers weren't keen on filling the chimney ("it needs to breathe"?) and since they were here doing other work I just asked them to get on with taking the chimney down and so the void is unfilled. Now I'm finding the bricked up fireplace impossible to paint, presumably because it is cold and attracting condensation rather than the plaster still drying out. So at some point I will go into the loft and see if it is still possible to get access to the top of the chimney. Are the beads light in weight?

    Yes, outside wall. Planning to add EWI at some point. Not sure how the roofers left the top - I will have to go into the loft and check.

    Once inside the insulation barrier for me it will no longer need ventilating
