There seems to have been an increase in the number of plastic roof tiles notably vent tiles and fan extractor terminals.

How long will it be before we see plastic roof tiles over the whole roof?

How stable are these to uv and are they as durable as the tiles they adjoin?

They are not as durable and they fade. But do we need them to last 100 years?

One issue with plastic tiles is that they are lighter; therefore need more fixing down due to wind uplift. The fixing makes it impossible just to slide a tile up when you wish to work on a roof.

And so thinner roof timbers are possible

    No worse than slates

And for the first few years (20??) less likely to crack when putting a roof ladder on them and probably won't spall with frost after a few years.

Over here some years ago I heard of a firm making composite roof tiles out of old car tiles, but that seems to have faded away

In the UK snow loading requirements may not allow much reduction in roof timber sizes, also BC may not sign of as someone MAY put normal tiles on the roof at a later date.

The 'recycled' slates are available, as a copy of a old hand-riven slate, suitable for pitches down to 11 degrees.
Made from old care tyres apparently, easy to use and fix, light and very resilient!
