    Want to put a tank in the garden and take existing soakaways to this for recycling. Comments please on any systems to avoid, or any recommended.

    go diy with a second hand ibs tank such as, though larger maybe

    go to this with SWD, then over flow to soakaway , stick a blue 25mm poly pipe to it from your house and a duct for some power etc.and fit a lid made out of a mini access chamber cover. (screwed shut)
    use a cheap dirty water pump to get it out to water the garden etc.
    Something more fancy, rig up a pump to PV panels and pump to a header in you loft , pipe up a separate system to feed your toilet and washing machine of this tank.

    looking at it a few years ago , any off the shelf RH sys. are potential less environmentally friendly than mains water. might have improved though.

    I used a smallish round bottomed flask shaped septic (£500) pump £200 can get cheaper and a pipe and a s/h hole I had left over on another job.

    Great ides, fice for flushing and garden stuff.

    What James said. The simpler the better.

    On the other hand, if you've got room (with that extra bit of disputed land?) how about a natural swimming pond? Can be DIYed for not a lot more than the cost of the liner, and will be larger, more useful, enjoyable and beautiful than a plastic tank, and the water will keep sweet.

    Mike7 ... what a great idea ... just love natural swimming pools, and had never clicked that of course they could be topped up by collected rooftop rainwater! Good link - thanks for putting that in.

    Is this something you have done? We are surrounded by sandstone where we are, so makes it a lot trickier to build and hold the water, but am still going to think very hard about this ...

    Here's one I did earlier - hope it encourages you. The motherearth people favour the natural look whereas the European ones I've seen pictures of tend to have more concrete and other structures around. Happy to share my experience further if you get serious.
