    If someone gave you enough second hand, 175mm thick, PIR Insulated Panels, to insulate the outside of your new build timber fame, would you use them?

    The panels are 3.5m tall and 1.2m wide and came out of a cold store, u-value is 0.1.

    From a cold store? no way! Just think of all the cold that has leeched into them over the years while they've been keeping the heat of the world out of the frozen stuff. Your house would be like something out of ice age as it released back into the air

    I'm kidding, of course..
    Heck yeah, though I didn't think PIR was used for EWI, something to do with moisture transmittance? Or do you mean outboard of the studwork but under a breather membrane? Heck yeah if you can afford the space in the cavity. Wool the cassettes, easier and faster than fitting solid boards to them and its not like you need to improve much on the u value after the PIR

    On a practical level, any material you use in the build has to be acceptable to your BCO. A short-cut to this is usually BBA or similar certification, or research and lab-based knowledge as per straw-bales. BCOs *can* accept other materials, but it's effectively 'on their own head'.

    If your BCO won't accept them, change your BCO! Get one that actually buys in to recycling and reuse.
