Anybody help with using a MPPT device to connect PV panels directly to an Imerssion Heater?

Direct connect with no battery connected.

DC switching can be an issue. It arcs well.

    Hi Steamy

    I was looking at:

    http://www.ebay.com/sch/techluck1/m.html

There looks to be other devices that are similar.

Asking if we have anything like this in the UK or DIY circuit ideas?

I have seen that one, no UK cost to be found.

Can't find a UK made device for UK market.

I was hoping for a diy circuit perhaps with ardunio control if required.

Sorry, haven't seen any MPPTs, commercial or DIY, for this sort of application other than the two already mentioned.

Have you considered matching the power by having multiple immersion elements and switching some on or off to follow the output of the panels, at least approximately?

These people http://www.tpfay.co.uk/ seem to do odd combinations including multiple elements in single standard bosses.

We had a thread on here before about this but the person asking was in Spain and they have much smaller immersion bosses, apparently.

    Why PV?
Is there a good reason not to use Solar Thermal tubes instead?

Elektor Magazine, May 2010, had an article on MPPT tracking and hot water storage with an array of ST collectors with several valves and pumps.

Yes, apart from the lack of a suitable MPPT, PV is more robust, simpler and cheaper if you want to get good performance for a large fraction of the year. It does use more roof area, though.

The cost of PV has come down a lot since 2010. The cost of ST not so much.

I have 4 kw PV and two panels of solar thermal, the south roof is full.

After working with the DNO they eventually confirmed I could put another 1.1 kw, that was not cost effective.

Hence the thoughts on MPPT systems especially as PV panel cost coming down and it can be a self installed.
