A job I am working on includes the replacement of one window in a non-domestic building. I had intended to use a Building Notice (FENSA being applicable only to domestic properties) but my council web-site (Sheffield) seems to suggest (but does not overtly state) that Bldg Notice is for domestic only. A quick Google only serves to cast more doubt! Can anyone help. A Full Plans app seems way OTT for a window! (What plans - a drawing of the opening, a pic of the old one and ditto of the new one, with regard being given to means of escape, and a statement of the glazing spec.?)

    Any recent experience of this?

I had to do the same as you and pay a plan fee and inspection. I think it was £200 ish to change a couple of windows.
All they ever did was drop in and check if its toughened, total waste of time paper and money.
Took them all of 5 minutes.
The next time I didn't bother.

How are they going to know if a window has been changed.

    Hi Nick,

As far as I know Building Notice is only for Domestic use.

I have done quite a bit of work on a Village Hall and on one occasion notified Building Control as the work was disabled access ramps (Part M) They didn't want to know. The officer basically said that they would only come out if the work related to structural alterations or affected the fire integrity of the Building

Like Nigel. I wouldn't bother. Also any work can be certified retrospectively if there is ever an issue

Thanks Nigel and Mike. I am tempted to take your 'route', particularly as there is the Regularisation route if need be. It isn't so much the money (we allowed for that - or at least for the price of a domestic BN) - it just seems total overkill. Yes, they need to know the glazing spec, incl safety glass where applicable, and they need to know that you have not worsened any means of escape, but *full plans*??!
