    I'm looking for some more ex-submarine batteries, I've already got 12, 2 volt (920 amp-hour at 10 hr rate) ex-military batteries and I want to double up my storage capabilities.

    i bought them second hand (from someone who was going on to the grid) about ten years ago.

    If anyone knows where kit like this can still be found I'd be very grateful.

    Keith, we've got our original battery bank sitting round doing nothing at present... don't know if you'd be interested. They're not ex-submarine, we bought them new in December '96, and they were intended for fork-lift trucks. Can't remember much about them apart from they're a 24v array, I think. Any use? If so let me know and I'll email you full details. So long as David's not got any plans for them, they're yours for collecting.

    That's a kind offer, thanks Jane. Have you gone onto grid tie? I recall the mention that you have a largish Proven wind turbine in a previous thread. I'm just installing a 2.5 kW battery charging model.

    No, we're too far away for grid connect: about five years ago the quote for electricty was £165,000 plus VAT, which was more than we paid for the house.

    Our Proven is a 6kW and it continues to do very well. We considered the 2.5kW model but once we'd factored in the Clear Skies grant there was little cost difference between the two, and we're very glad we took the bigger one now. Who is installing yours? We had several problems (including three system fires in the first year) which were all down to errors made by Proven in their wiring, so we're glad we used someone else to install (Bob Robarts, Sustainergy), as it gave us some back-up when sorting things out with Proven.

    If you're on-grid then you won't have the same problems we did: the fires were all to do with off-grid wiring, first in the tower of the turbine, second in an inverter, and third in dump-load relays in the turbine control box. Proven does very few off-grid turbines, apparently--less than 2% of their business is off-grid--so they're not very used to them. At least, that was their excuse!

    Sorry to butt in, but if Keith doesn't take up your offer of your old fork-lift battery array might a newbie [yours truly] be able to do so please?
    I suspect that a free offer might only extend to friends or at least forum members of longer standing than ourselves, but I could offer some money, labour or free IT consultancy if you wished...
    We have managed on candles for over a year now but finally have planning permission to erect a wind turbine next to our caravan/ barn conversion. Yippee!
    We are near Presteigne on the border between Herefordshire and Powys.

    Daz, Keith is first on the list but if he declines, you're welcome to the batteries and the inverter. Also, our neighbour is looking out for a small wind turbine, and might be interested in the one you have for sale. Can you let me have your email address or contact details, please, so that I can contact you? Thanks.

    I'm unlikely to decline Daz. Sorry. Just waiting for Jane to send me the spec.

    There is a whispering facility on this forum and I had used this to talk further to Jane regarding her offer, my response to her therefore was not displayed on the open thread. I do apologise for the lack of clarity on my part.
