    not used any of these yet , so cant say, other than there are cheaper DIY options
    SMA TL inverter have 1amp relay that switch at set generation levels for set time.
    this can be used via 13A+ contact relay to switch immersion.
    There are several DIy options out there on the web . i posted one a while back somewhere here.

    "Domestic hot water monitoring results
    June 2009
    During the period March 2006 to September 2007 BSRIA carried out detailed monitoring of domestic hot water consumption in 120 dwellings across the UK. The project was managed by the Energy Saving Trust on behalf of Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) with the data analysis and this report produced by the Energy Monitoring Company.

    The study had four principal objectives: the real-time monitoring of water consumption and associated energy requirement, the identification of the patterns of usage in terms of times and temperatures, the comparison of the results obtained with BREDEM assumptions, and the identification of where in the dwelling domestic hot water was consumed. Although the volumetric usage of hot water was in line with BREDEM it was determined that the average temperature rise of water from cold feed to hot delivery was significantly lower than that currently assumed in BREDEM. Using BREDEM would therefore overestimate the actual energy consumption associated with domestic hot water use."

    some Helpful fella sent me this super cheap option a while back
    "Hi the device consists of two photo electric switches (you can buy these at maplins for £5.99 each) and a s.s.r (solid state relay) you can get them on ebay for 99p +p&p
    firstly solder one of the photo cells to a long lead(something like doorbell wire)
    then this is placed somewhere in the sunshine so that it's in the sun at the same time as your
    solar panels ( i've put mine on the roof next to the panels) run the lead back to the circuit board
    this is then set so that when you are producing X amount of power the switch operates.
    this alone will turn on and off your heater but to stop it from using imported leccy when you turn something
    on like a kettle,the second photo electric switch looks at the red flashing light on
    your electric meter (you need to have a digital electric meter with the red flashing light on it)
    the photo electric switch that looks at the meter needs to be the one with the delay on it
    when the led is flashing you are importing leccy and when it is on all the time you are exporting lecy,
    place the photo cell so that it is looking at this light this then triggers the switch when the light comes on the output of the relay is linked to the output of the other switch which then turns on the s.s.r
    this then turns on your heater

    Not tried it, but thought it might be of interst .
    I've a sunny 4000tl so can use the internal relay to trigger immersion as discussed elsewhere on GBF , another thing for the to do list when work gets quiet ( if only )

    I asked the manufacturer of this unit about DIY solutions and if there was any reason we might prefer to purchase his product rather than put our own together (apart from convenience). This was his response:

    I am not aware of any DIY one that is the same accuracy and function as ours, most are simple switchers, which just switch a mechanical relay in once a threshold eg 1.5 kwatts is reached. Those units require fitting a 1.5 kwatt immersion heater or a step down transformer. They therefore waste up to 1.5 kwatts before switching in and waste any excess above 1.5 kwatts when switched in. Our unit therefore captures about three times or more power than these simple switchers.

    Our unit is fully proportional and starts diverting power in proportion, once approx 40 watts export is sensed.

    If you know of a comparable but DIY version I would be interested to see details of it.

    Our unit is professionally designed, has a 40 year MTBF being all solid state and very conservatively rated. They are expandable using our slave units to higher powers.

    the proportional diverter sounds good , do other pro. PV immersion switches do similar.
    £500 ish for that one any idea on ROI time scale

    Average UK DHW energy requirement 3000kW/year at night rate E7 6.5p =£195 ( £150 gas maybe)

    in last 9 months (since diy export meter fitted) with my 3.6kWp DNC sys.
    gen. 2206
    exported 1696
    used. 438
    so potential for that 1696kWh to be dumped into DHW in the last 9 months, if you dont want to export to the grid to offset others CO2 ( remembering heating DHW with gas might be less CO2 intensive than using grid electric )
