I'm insulating a section of my loft using Warmcel 100. How much do I need to fluff it up? I'm finding it very laborious and time consuming. I've got 14 packs to fluff and each one is taking way over an hour to fluff (I have to fluff it, transfer to another bag and carry that into the loft due to access problems). My hands are hurting! Anyone got any tips or know a quick method? Am I just fluffing it too much? It's hard to know what it's supposed to look like...

We had to do about 120 bags! Old dustbin, approx one-third full, plaster-mixer attachment in a drill -dustmask and goggles! And you'll have already found that when you sweat it sets on your arms like papier mache! You will know when you have not fluffed it enough - the bags won't cover as large an area as they should. When contracting I now always allow for 10% over. If I fluff it really well, the customer gets a discount. If, as very often, it doesn't go as far as it should, I don't make a loss.

So in terms of volume, roughly what should an 8KG pack expand to? From the excel website that should be 2.5m2 at 100mm, what size of sack would that equate to? I'm transferring the fluffed stuff into a large 100L V4 Vermiculite bag, how many of them should a pack fluff up to?

Just a thought - Not fluffing it enough presumably affects the thermal conductivity yes?

    2.5m2 at 100mm would be 0,25m3
workout the volume of the original bag to get an idea of the degree of fluffing required. If it needs to be 3 times more volume once fluffed, then as nick says fill a bin to one third and fluff it till it is full - or what ever ratio is required.

Other than that, just focus on the many years of cosy comfort vs the 14+ hours of toil. Not really a bad deal, or at least that is what you can tell yourself once its all done .

Got myself a plaster mixer attachment and a bucket, but I can't get it to fluff to 3 times it's volume, I would say twice the packed volume is all I can get to no matter how much I stir it. Still, one pack now takes me about half an hour to fluff! God knows what it would be like to do 120 bags!

Terry, you're right, in these dark hours of toil, I must think of the future fuel savings! So far 2 months full time insulating our very complex roof. In hindsight I would have been better taking it off and starting again from scratch...

I did not mean to suggest, when I said '' Old dustbin, approx one-third full'' that it should fluff up 3x (I am not sure of the ratio), but from bitter experience if you have it more than a third or so full it goes *everywhere*! I have a big beard, and its appearance is not (I think) improved by the addition of Warmcel. (Others may disagree).

'' God knows what it would be like to do 120 bags!'' I think we did at least 50 by hand (imagine rubbing a ton of pastry!!) before someone (mot me - I'm not that clever) suggested the plaster whisk.

That's made my night Nick, what a picture you've conjured in my brain:rolling:

Disclaimer - I did say whatever ratio is required, ie volume of the original bag vs 0,25m3

As for the beard, christmas is coming !!! Then again, probably want the job done by then:sad:

Get a bit of wood about 10 x 2" wide and about 1" thick (or whatever fits your size hand)
Pre drill 20-30 holes in it at regular intervals and knock 2" nails through.
Use like a scrubbing brush to "scrub" the warmcel off the bail, fluffs it up lovely.
Probably not much quicker, but saves your hands.
