    Hi
Han anyone tried to transfer heat from an independent vented heating system (wood stove with 34,000 btu boiler with coil plus big rad) to a closed pressurised system (wood pellet with rads and underfloor) using a heat exchanger? I am just about to get the stove and am a bit nervous!! Can anyone see a problem with such a system, so long as a stat on the stove gets the pumps in the two systems running? The heat exchanger would be placed on the return pipe back to the boiler.

    Thanks

I would suggest that you make sure you have a back up system in case of power failure. If your pump system fails, you will need to allow the back boiler to thermosyphon to a storage tank, otherwise instant boiling will occur in the stove. this can be easily addressed by installing a motorized valve on the thermosyphon system. this valve must be powered to stay shut, then if your power fails it will open, allowing the heat to flow naturally. A good plumbers merchant should have them and make sure its full flow, some cheaper ones are 28mm connections but have a 20mm ball orifice.
You could fit a large accumilator tank above your wood burner with coils from it and the pellet boiler. It all seams a lot of expense, whats wrong with using your stove to do all your heating needs ?
    hope that helps

Thanks Tom. Hmm lets just say it is a newish build and I have a 400l storage tank with 4 coils already in beside where the stove is going (not an accumilator....hindsight!) In an ideal world that is the plan with the WP as back up.
