    I recently upgraded solar installation to heat a swimming pool. 2 heat exchangers, one for solar and one for gas boiler top up. The plumber mistakenly connected the solar exchanger to the gas boiler one and the boiler exchanger to the solar feed. The gas boiler heat exchanger was very old. The solar engineer said that it didn’t matter, but when it failed to replace it with a solar one. It soon failed so I have had another heat exchanger installed. Reading up about the new heat exchanger, it says it is for a gas boiler, not solar. Does it matter that it isn’t specifically for solar; will they do the same job irrespective of what the source of feed is?

    Assuming they are plate heat exchangers, they could be input temperature graded,( possibly better quality of construction, pressure, brazed parts etc.). A Solar Thermal array can reach extremely high temperature usually not associated with gas boilers where the water output is regulated hence the differing labelling........I guess.

    Not that I know much about heat exchangers but - read the guarantee paperwork, it could exclude fit-ups other than to gas boilers. And chemicals in the solar system might be different to a gas boiler, potential compatibility issue. Are the operating pressures the same on both primaries? You have had one heat exchanger (albeit old) fail on the solar - is there a message there?
    But first read the guarantee!
