Is there any hope that the sustainability agenda of these games is going to get even close to the original proposals that were a major part of the reason why we got them in the first place?

They are digging a bl**dy big hole. It looked like the winter Olympics with all the snow last Monday.

Sorry! No way, just all PR B*ll Sh!t. By the way, I am getting sick of all this green PR B*ll Sh!t spouted by the Government, does anyone else feel the same? We need something more tangible!

We can all make a contribution...maybe start by installing a gasifying wood boiler if you live in the country, or a pellet boiler if you live in the city. Every biomass boiler installed strikes a blow for energy independence, and makes the world a cleaner place for our kids.

To what though? I am the proud owner of 2 new (log) stoves, but the wood smoke thread is slightly disturbing.

Dave, a word of advice, people don't like people spamming threads with advertising for their own products, on this thread and others.

It will all end up massively over budget and fundimentally flawed!

    Simple as that!

The theme for the opening is to be "Isles of wonder". Apparently it's about "a land recovering from it's industrial legacy". Is that really the way we want to portray our industrial heritage something that has to be "recovered" from? Oh well. Apparently it will also to include "nurses and humour".

I like the Track and Field stuff, but having seen two Olympic sites (Barcelona and Sydney) I found them pretty run down. As for the 'Green' aspect, I would have thought that the housing they are selling off after is to a higher standard than most, so that is good.
Be interesting to see just how much disturbance the traffic measures make in total. Seem to remember that the same argument happened when they brought in the Congestion Charge. I don't see thousands of cars piled up ten deep on the approaches to Central London.
Give it a year and it will all be forgotten about.

Now Orangemannot, say what you really think

I'll take your money on that one since I think it is 95% of the venues are complete and have had test events in them.

I dislike all the negativity; do you have no pride? The easiest thing to do is moan and put it down. I think having the Olympics is a fantastic thing and I for one have my tickets and am really looking forward to it. My Brother-in-Law has worked for the delivery organisation since they were awarded and the insights are fascinating. It will be a huge success and I am really looking forward to being a part of it.

I last visited the main venue site around 2 1/2 years ago and was pretty impressed with progress (and with the feeling of walking out of the competitors tunnel into the stadium!). In terms of organisation and the completion of the facilities on time I'm certain they have it cracked. The security stuff was looking pretty sorted when I was last there, too, so hopefully they will be able to get tens of thousands of people on and off what is, in effect, an island, without too many delays.

I won't be going to any events though, purely because, in my view, the spirit of the Olympiad has been lost beneath US-style commercialism. The final straw for me was the commercial ban that prevents anyone taking any form of refreshment, water etc with them into the venue - you are forced (by the prime sponsor) to consume only their products while inside the venue (they will be confiscating water bottles, drinks, refreshments etc from people on entry, I believe). Having been involved in a small way I am sure that this ban isn't because of security, it was a condition laid down by a sponsor.
