We're getting a new water connection + meter installed by Thames Water. The water meter will go out in the footpath as is typical. But we'd like to install a meter inside also that is plainly visible (and perhaps can produce digital data).

Can you recommend a water meter for this purpose?

Found one a while back, posted the details up here somewhere. Was an ultra sonic one I seem to remember.

Search for BES. They have meters to buy online.

Looking at the same thing at the moment and in addition to the above you could have a look at JetRange (UK supplier) and Emmeti, both have pulse output (1 pulse for 10l) if you are considering automated logging

How does one hook up to pulse meters? Do we need to get a counter as well or can we hook it up to a network/computer?

And what do you make of this meter?

I have just got an optical pulse transmitter for my electrial energy monitor. Only just plugged it in but it is already reading less than the existing one by about 15%.

Searching the OpenEnergyMonitor site for “water meter” might help:

    https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=site%3Aopenenergymonitor.org+water+meter

    E.g.,

    http://openenergymonitor.org/emon/applications/water

Of course, it might just confuse.

Which one did you get? I recently purchased an Opti-Pulse from Enica and fed it into my home automation system and it seems to be working well.

In reply to my earlier post for my hot water monitoring needs I went with a Tomi water meter from Meters UK. It cost a reasonable amount and has pulse output at 1 litre, now thinking of a second meter to measure cold water usage.

I got the OptiSmart to go with my CurrentCost meter, just been trying to set it up at moment, intend to put the ordinary CT clamp meter with it to see what the difference really is, job for morning I think.

I phoned them up and it is available in the UK with WRAS certification. And it can also be placed vertically which helps in our situation. However he said it shouldn't be placed near a pipe size reduction because of turbulence.

However if we go from 32 mm MPDE to 28 mm copper then that's not a reduction is it?

Do you know of any other water meters that can be installed vertically?

ISO 4064 Class B for horizontal installation and Class A for vertical installation

Do take a look at the Elster site I mentioned if you want comparisons to the Kampstup meter

You can deal with turbulence with the meter type - ie single or multi jet, ultrasonic, volumetric etc etc

Interesting product. A meter that fits directly on your shower feed and monitors energy and water use right in front of your face.

And in a smilar vein but not on the market (yet?):

Thanks for those links, I was looking for something similar when the kids were younger - but they still come back with their wasteful habits! Just love the polar bear graphic.

They weren't much help. They have this interesting meter on their website but apparently they've have production problems with it and it's not available (at least in the UK):
    http://www.elstermetering.com/en/product-detail/915/en/SM150

They suggested the V200 instead but then the technical advisor I spoke to couldn't even tell me if it had leak detection or not.

Problem with this one is that it doesn't have anti-backflow (although that might be the case for all of these ultrasonic types?)
Edit: I tell a lie, most of them are available with a non-return valve. The technical advisor I spoke to at Kumstrup UK just didn't seem to know what he was talking about; he didn't even know the codes for each type of their meters.

Edit 2: ring up stockshed.com, one of their distributors, and they just hang up on answering. How hard can it be to purchase smart water meter!?

Finally managed to speak to somebody who seemed to know what they talking about. Think I'm going to go with the Kamstrup Multical 21 (021-66-A0H8X). Non-return valve, leak detection all in one.
