Report in the Guardian today on household water use.

    http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2013/jul/04/daily-showers-water-use-uk-homes

The full report can be obtained from
    http://www.energysavingtrust.org.uk/content/download/80137/970686/version/1/file/At+Home+with+Water.pdf

Perhaps we should all shower with a friend. Makes a change from being asked to bathe with a friend :-)

(Apologies. I got carried away with the EST report on electricity use and put that up originally. Now edited to put up the appropriate report.)

The real full report is on the DEFRA site, but not got 850 quid to read it.
    http://randd.defra.gov.uk/Default.aspx?Menu=Menu&Module=More&Location=None&ProjectID=17359&FromSearch=Y&Publisher=1&SearchText=EV0702&SortString=ProjectCode&SortOrder=Asc&Paging=10#Description

I hate it when they charge us for what we have already paid for:devil:

£850 is for the printed version, I guess. I have downloaded the PDF for free, all 5.7Mb of it.

All those involved with the compliance with the Freedom of Information Act do their best to encourage electronic versions of information for distribution. Keeps the costs down. Unless you wish to hide things, then you use the Yes Minoster technique.

The DEFRA site would not let me download it this morning, so I called up EST and asked if they had a link and they just pointed me to the one above.
    I get:
"We are very sorry but there was a problem obtaining document 10043_R66141HouseholdElectricitySurveyFinalReportissue4.pdf?time=0 from the database. The systems administrator has been notified of this problem."

Odd! I've just successfully accessed that document (3.45pm).

    Possible problem your end?

Is that the DEFRA document or the EST one. I got the EST one no problem.
Shall try with Chrome rather than Firefox.

Ah, it is a Firefox issue, downloading now.

£68M/year wasted on overfilling kettles. About a pound a person.

I always thought this was a non-problem and here is the evidence.
  1.
    from article
Water- and energ-saving tips from the EST
    • Installing an eco-shower head to a mixer or power shower – 49% of households could do this
    • Washing clothes at 30C or below – saving 40% of energy on a wash at 50-60C
    • Boiling only the water you need when you fill the kettle – overfilling costs Britons £68m a year
    Well here's a free eco-shower head

Haven't read the report but with kettles do they take into account the heating benefit for a substantial portion of the year?

Posted By: Ed Daviesdo they take into account the heating benefit

Good question Ed and technically sound, but frankly who cares.

I repeat: a pound a person. Try keeping warm on that.

Indeed, but it's fun to point ways in which it's actually an even smaller saving.
  2.
I wouldn't mind having just 1% of that £1 per person
£680,000/year would do me nicely :boogie:

I save a lot of time only filling it up for my needs, and less noise (I work at home in the kitchen).
