So many of you out there advising insulating buildings externally, and so many saying it's a shame but for very good reasons they can't...
Well, we could..our slate built manse is detached and we own a bit all the way round, we are not in a national park, nor is it listed. Most importantly, we don't think a dark grey monolith looks that good on the hill so we are open to suggestions for finishes..
Anyone out there interested in designing, monitoring or even helping fund this is most welcome to get in touch or come round for a cuppa and look the place over.
We are in rural Mid Wales

Hi Finny, I am interested. But depends how far away you are really. I am in Barry, just outside Cardiff.

Good project and a good idea -- if you can go 200mm eps or better and lightweight or else lime render. Cant come or contribute but I with you.

You're being negative about the beauty of slate! Tune into it, it's a wonderful material to work with and look at, and lent itself to being built into sturdy dwellings with the wall stones weathershot (slanted to the outside), bedded in lime mortar.

But you're right to aim to insulate externally. Consider the external window and door reveals, and how you might make wall insulation and roof insulation contiguous. And should an external insulating 'shell' on such a property 'breathe'?
  1.
When I first read 'slate' I thought 'insulate, then slate-hang', but then I saw you didn't want a grey lump! I think slate hanging (could be tile hanging) is beautiful, and I don't really like render.

    thanks for comments so fa..
Roger, I do love slate and think it a truly noble material, but our village can only be described as dour.. as much to do with the clour of the sky matching the piles of slate waste everywhere! Need a bit of colour in our lives!
Need to do the roof soon so reckon a wall and roof wrap possible, as for breathing..I was gonna leave all the windows ajar to cool us down anyway!
Nick, we have the weather side tile hung already..sorry, not a great look, I not too keen on render either but gotta stick something on the outside!
    Keep em coming..
