    Anyone have experience of these?
One that we have found is:
http://www.dan-wood.co.uk/thermal-efficiency.htm - I did a search of the forum, but couldn't find them mentioned anywhere. I wonder if anyone has looked at their packages and found them less favourable than others on price/service?

They definitely have some good reviews (understood they are hardly likely to post bad ones) and the finishes look good in their photos, but again I'm sure they cherry pick.

They can also be found at www.selfbuildukltd.co.uk where completed build costs in their examples range from £75-89/sqft. Looking through their site makes me think this doesn't include groundworks up to and including the foundation slab, which could be costly depending on ground conditions etc.

Their U values are pretty good, but I think there are other packages offered elsewhere that will perform better and probably have a similar build cost, although you would supply your own finishing trades which could take a bit longer and possibly lead to some finger pointing in the event of a problem.

I guess the best way to make comparison is to send your plans (if you already have them) to each company for a quote and if possible visit at least one house they've built so you can speak to the owners and see what the finish is like.

For me the U values seem too high, I am sure that they would use a higher spec in Poland

Does U=0.148 W/(m²·K) walls but 0.18 W/(m²·K) roofs strike anybody else as a bit back to front?

In their scope of works the suggested floor make up is 50mm screed on 100mm polystyrene or polyurethane board on 100mm concrete subfloor which wouldn't be range topping. This changes to 65mm screed on 85mm insulation for underfloor heating...nice warm subfloor lol!

Overall, a convenient way to build a home of middling specification in a short time period and at a known cost, but some way behind passive performance.

I suspect it is standard to cater for all their designs (bungalow/1.5/2), it gets expensive and time consuming to improve the U value on the roofs once you fill between the rafters...... for 99.9% of people who are going to buy them they won't be fussed for the additional hassle of getting better values.

Dan wood have built quite a few houses in Scotland, they certainly never used to do any groundworks, you provided them with all ground works complete and a level floor slab. So the real unknown costs are still there. Don't think they used to do all the fit out either, kitchens certainly weren't included.

I have been round one of their builds and it seemed good to me. Cheap finishes on the one I saw, but that was personal choice. It went up quick and to budget and owners very happy with them. I know they arent top notch U values, but you get what you ask for from them. Architect in Scotland got good praise from couple.

Give them a ring. They have reps and houses dotted around. Mine lives in Taunton and is keen to show his own house off (I havent seen it). The one I saw is near Saltash, Cornwall.

thank you for that. it's good to know that they are fairly active throughout the UK. I did a search and found one of their planning applications for a 600sqm yukky mansion in Sunningdale!! But then it was in a road full of even yukkier mansions.....
