We've bought a number of tarpaulins from builder's merchants and they're all cheap crap which all fall apart at the slightest hint of sunlight.

Can you recommend a decent one from experience?

Never found one yet!"!!!, However I did get a cover made for my trailer and it was made of proper commercial truck material and its lasted 15 years and still waterproof, might be worth a look at ebay:-

Try these, I've used them several times, buy the ones with the internal reinforcing mesh they are a good combination of quality and price.

There used to be small firms that made such things for hauliers, but (here at least) you hardly ever see a sheeted load nowadays (except maybe a fly sheet on top of hay & straw) so maybe they aren't around anymore.

I can't tell if they are the same people, but google tells me that www.tarpaulinfactory.co.uk seem to be based in the same small Lincolnshire village as the firm that the hauliers in that area (including my Dad) used to use. The firm I remember, T&C Robinson, still exists in the same village but they seem to be saddlery/tack (always part of their business) only now.

N.B. Last time I had anything to do with this was > 30 years ago, so more like reminiscence that current experience!

Place near Redruth, called MacSalvers, sells all sorts of tarps, sheets and covers.
Redruth is about 30 miles from Landsend, and if anyone is thinking of a day trip from upcountry, wait till end of September, the weather is better and Emmets have gone home (may get some useful caravan bits from side of A30 too).

This is what I'd get, these look great:
    http://www.tarpaflex.co.uk/acatalog/Canvas-Tarpaulins---Tan--18OZ-.html

However, think we're going to risk it. We just opened up roof yesterday and the weather for the week is looking perfect. So we're going to race to get the dormer all framed in and clad by end of play Sunday before it starts raining Monday!

    ...Canvas-Tarpaulins...

    The real McCoy!
I have a piece of canvas duck that I use over the windscreen & front of the car to help keep any frost off in winter. It's still in remarkably good nick ~35 years after it was given to me because it was considered "worn out" for use on loads...
